TWENTY-SIX

Fifty-Five and Older

“We’re going to get through this, Jamie,” Jay soothed as he handed her a mug of steaming tea and sat down next to her on the couch.

“Ben will call us soon. I’m sure he’ll help us. He’s a great attorney. He specializes in corporate and real estate law. When my grandparents died, there were a lot of legal issues and he handled them all. I don’t know what I would have done without him. He was there for me when I needed him then and I’m sure he’ll be willing to help us now. His son, Tyler, specializes in family law. Maybe after this mess is cleared up, he can help with April’s adoption.”

Jamie nodded and sipped her tea. Her phone rang suddenly. She quickly pulled it from her pocket and looked at the number.

“It’s Gran,” she said, placing her tea on the coffee table and answering it. She had planned to call her soon anyway to let her know a social worker was going to pay her a visit tomorrow. She wasn’t too concerned about giving Gran plenty of advance notice. Her house was always impeccable and the more notice she gave her, the more time Gran would spend worrying.

“Hi, Gran,” she said, trying her best to sound cheerful. “I was going to call you in a little bit.”

Any false cheer in Jamie’s voice quickly vanished while she spoke with her panicked grandmother. She began to tremble inside. It started in her core and radiated outward to her extremities, causing her hands to shake so violently she had trouble holding her phone against her ear.

“Can‘t she stay there with you for just another week or two?” she asked, an edge of hysteria in her voice. “Why are they giving you such a hard time?” she wailed, biting her lower lip.

She listened again while her grandmother explained.

“Don’t worry, Gran. We’ll work this out,” Jamie spoke reassuringly as she massaged her temple. She went on to tell her grandmother about the upcoming visit from the social worker, downplaying the whole thing. “I promise I’ll call you back as soon as we work all this out.”

Jamie hung up the phone and looked at Jay.

He stared back at her anxiously.

“April can’t stay with Gran anymore. She has nowhere to live. We’re going to lose her, Jay! We’re going to lose her!”

“What do you mean? Why can’t she stay with your grandmother anymore?” Jay asked in his calm, even voice while he gripped her hand.

Jamie’s head was pounding so violently she believed it would split open at any moment, relieving the horrible pressure building inside. She was in so much pain she couldn’t put a coherent thought together. She had to tell Jay what was going on. She closed her eyes, massaged her forehead, and took a few breaths in a fruitless attempt to soothe her pounding head. She didn’t have time for this. They had to come up with a solution now!

She opened her eyes and forged ahead, despite the excruciating pain.
